EU4Health: What are the main priorities of the Work Programme 2024?

The European Union's commitment to fostering a healthier future takes a significant leap forward with the launch of the EU4Health program's Work Programme 2024. This strategic initiative aims to contribute to the ongoing development of a European Health Union, addressing key policy priorities and introducing innovative initiatives across various domains. What are the focal points, key initiatives, and the indicative budget for the year 2024?

Policy Priorities:

1. Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (€117.6 million):

The program places a strong emphasis on combating cancer through the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. Initiatives include the strengthening of digital capabilities, personalized cancer medicines, integration of cancer images into a pan-European infrastructure, and the establishment of a cancer registry for comprehensive European cancer information. This concerted effort aims to enhance the continent's capabilities in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

2. EU’s Resilience to Cross-Border Threats to Health (€14.7 million):

The Work Programme 2024 allocates resources to reinforce the EU's resilience against cross-border health threats. This involves the implementation of regulations addressing serious cross-border threats to health, support for the functioning of EU Reference Laboratories (EURLs), combating antimicrobial resistance, and employing innovative techniques such as the sterile insect technique to eliminate the yellow fever mosquito in Cyprus.

3. European Health Data Space (€25.7 million):

Aiming to harness the potential of health data, this initiative supports the primary and secondary use of health data. It also promotes and develops digital solutions at the international level and encourages the adoption of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare. The European Health Data Space endeavors to create a collaborative platform for efficient health data management and utilization.

4. Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (€70.9 million):

This priority area addresses both non-communicable and communicable diseases. Special attention is given to mental health challenges faced by vulnerable groups, including displaced people from Ukraine. The program also focuses on tobacco control policies and provides support for long-COVID patients, reinforcing the EU's commitment to holistic health promotion.

5. Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe and Health Systems (€41.4 million):

The Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe is a cornerstone of the Work Programme, encompassing the implementation of health legislations, regulatory flexibilities to mitigate medicine shortages, and initiatives related to blood, tissues, cells, organs, medical devices, and in-vitro diagnostic medical devices. Health technology assessment is also prioritized to ensure the continuous improvement of health systems across Europe.

6. Global Health and International Initiatives (€4.3 million):

Acknowledging the interconnected nature of health challenges, the program supports digital solutions at the international level and establishes a repository of Global Health Union actions. This global perspective underscores the EU's commitment to collaborative efforts in addressing health issues beyond its borders.

7. Other Recurrent, Horizontal, IT, and Communication Activities (€7 million):

Beyond specific health priorities, the Work Programme allocates resources for recurrent, horizontal, IT, and communication activities. This holistic approach ensures the seamless integration and coordination of various elements within the EU4Health program.

The EU4Health program's Work Programme for 2024 is a testament to the European Union's dedication to building a healthier and more resilient continent. Through strategic policy priorities, innovative initiatives, and a substantial budget allocation of €281.6 million, the EU is actively working towards the realization of a European Health Union. The program's comprehensive approach reflects the EU's commitment to addressing diverse health challenges, fostering collaboration, and advancing the well-being of its citizens.
